Managing/Coaching Career

Began last season by signing a two-year contract extension through 2011 on February 17, 2009. In his third season as the Marlins skipper, led the Fish to their second consecutive winning record (87-75), marking the sixth time in franchise history the club has finished above .500. Became the all-time winningest manager in Marlins history with 242 career wins, surpassing Jack McKeon's 241. With an 87-75 mark this season, joined Jack McKeon (2004-05) as the only managers to record consecutive campaigns over the .500 mark...Named the 2008 Sporting News NL Manager of the Year after guiding the Marlins to a 84-77 record in his second year as manager. Marked the fifth time in franchise history that the club finished over .500. He became only the third Marlins manager to lead the team to a winning record (Leyland-1997; McKeon-2003-2005)...He was named the ninth manager in franchise history on October 3, 2006, replacing Joe Girardi. His first game (April 2, 2007 at Washington) marked his managerial debut at the Major League level. Served as coach for National League at All-Star Game in San Francisco, under manager Tony La Russa...Spent previous five seasons (2002-06) in the Atlanta Braves organization, including the last four seasons as third base coach at the Major League level. Managed the triple-A Richmond Braves to a 75-67 second-place finish in 2002...He returned for his 11th season with the Marlins, where he served as third base coach at the Major League level from 1999-2001. He managed for seven seasons in the Marlins organization from 1992-1998. Led Portland (AA) to a 79-63 record and first-place finish in 1997. Was selected by Baseball America as the Eastern League Manager of the Year in 1997. Recognized by Baseball America as the Florida State League Manager of the Year in 1994, after going 78-61 with Brevard County (A) and finishing second to Tampa in the FSL championship series. Named Baseball America's California League Manager of the Year in 1993, guiding High Desert (A) to an 85-52 mark en route to becoming California League Champions. That championship in 1993 marked the first ever by a Marlins' affiliate. Received the Carl Barger Player Development Person of the Year Award in 1993. Named the first minor league manager in Marlins history, leading the 1992 Erie (A) club to a 40-37 record en route to the New York-Penn League championship series...He began his managerial career in 1990, taking over the unaffiliated Miami Miracle (A) of the Florida State League with 20 games remaining on their schedule. He continued his post as manager of the Miracle in 1991.

PLAYING CAREER

Selected by the New York Yankees in the 16th round of the 1982 June draft, and spent six seasons as a catcher in the Yankees farm system...had career average of .192 (188x945) with 20 home runs and 118 RBI in 344 games...Made professional debut with Bradenton (A) in 1982, batting .240 (31x129) with two home runs and 16 RBI in 40 games...Played final pro season in 1987, splitting time between Albany and Prince William (A)...hit .125 (6x48) with six RBI in 26 games at Albany, and .065 (2x31) with one RBI in 16 games with Prince William.

PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS

Fredi Jesus Gonzalez and his wife, Pamela, have one daughter, Gabrielle (2/5/91), and one son, Alex Christopher (7/14/93)... graduated from Miami's Southridge High School in 1982.
